Retail sales rose 0.2% in October after being revised up to a 1.9% gain during the month of September. The slowdown largely reflects a giveback to hurricane-related preparations and repairs. Building materials and supplies, which surged 3% in September, dropped 1.2% in October. We saw a drop in spending at gasoline stations, driven by a fall in prices at the gas pump. Those were the main reasons for the return to earth of overall retail sales.
